Transformer Type

When it comes to a transformer type, TEMCo offers a huge selection.  They offer a variety of various transformer types in which they design and manufacture.  They are one of the leading distributors and manufacturers of different transformer types in the industry today.  There are a lot of different transformer types that are made for different purposes.  Regardless of the design of the transformer, the various transformer types on the market today pretty much are used and employ the basic principle of all transformers.

Various Transformer Types

  • Laminated Core Transformer: One of the most common transformer types and is used quite often in appliances to convert utility voltage to a lower voltage to power the appliance.

  • Toroidal Transformer:  This transformer type is shaped like a doughnut.  Copper windings wrap all around the ring shaped core.  They reduce the external magnetic field.

  • Autotransformer:  An autotransformer type has one single winding which is tapped somewhere along the winding.  The AC or pulsed voltage is going to be applied to just a portion of the winding. The higher or lower voltage will be produced through another portion of the winding.  The higher voltage on this transformer type will be connected to the ends of the winding and then the lower voltage from an end to a tap.  The autotransformer is offered in a small version along with a three phase version that is used in electric power distribution systems.

  • Polyphase Transformers:  When you use this transformer type with three phase power, you can use three separate single phase transformers or you can connect all three phases to a single polyphase transformer type.  Three primary windings are connected together as well as the three secondary windings.  Most common connections will be Y-Delta, Delta-Y, Delta-Delta and Y-Y.  The polyphase transformer type is capable of even having configurations that consist of more or less than 6 windings with various tap connections.

  • Oil Cooled Transformer:  These large transformer types are used in power distribution centers or electrical substations.  The coils and the core of this transformer type will be immersed in oil to cool and insulate the transformer.  Fire resistant liquids are used to do this. 

  • Isolation Transformer:  In this transformer type, the secondary winding is not connected to the primary winding.  They are mainly used to provide isolation instead of voltage transformation.  They are 1:1 laminated core transformers that sometimes have extra voltage tappings.

  • Voltage Transformer:  The voltage transformer is often called a potential transformer.  It is a transformer type of instrument transformer that is used for metering and also protection when using high voltage circuits.  The voltage transformer type will present negligible load to the supply that is being measured and will give a precise voltage ratio which will accurately step down high voltages.  The voltage transformer type are most often used in circuits in which the system voltage is above 600 volts.

  • Pulse Transformer:  These transformer types are used for transmitting rectangular electrical pulses.  These are pulses that have a fast rise and a fast fall.  The pulse transformer comes in small, medium and large versions.  The small versions are used in digital logic and telecommunications circuits while the medium versions are used in power control circuits such as a camera flash controller.  The larger versions are used in the electrical power distribution industry. 

  • Air Core Transformers: The high frequency industry uses this transformer type.  Since they do not have a core, they may be nothing more that wire soldered onto a printed circuit board with a few turns of the wire made.
