Once the transformer is turned on and the transformer inrush occurs, it will greatly be reduced after about four cycles. TEMCo manufactures and distributes many transformers that deal with transformer inrush such as control transformers. How Does Transformer Inrush OccurWhen the transformer is first initially started, a transformer inrush of up to 10 to 50 times larger than the current that is rated for the transformer, will flow through for several cycles. When using large transformers, the transformer inrush can occur for much longer. This transformer rush happens when the primary winding of the transformer is connected around what we call the zero-crossing of the primary voltage. Toroid transformers are well known for having transformer inrush. These transformers can experience up to 80 times larger transformer inrush. This is due to the fact that the residue magnetism is almost as high as the saturation magnetism at the knee of the hysteresis loop. This will cause the transformer to have some residual flux density and when the transformer is getting reenergized, the incoming flux adds to any existing flux and then the transformer will move into more saturation. The limiting current is the only resistance of the primary side windings and the power line at this point. What To Use To Limit Transformer InrushUsing a control transformer is one of the ways to limit transformer inrush. A control transformer is basically an isolation transformer that was designed purposely to handle these sporadic periods of electrical overloads which we refer to as transformer inrush. The control transformer starts to work at the time of the transformer inrush to provide secondary voltage stability or regulation. Industrial control transformers will also limit transformer inrush.
