Winding Faults A winding transformer fault is controlled by such factors in magnitude like the winding connection, fault voltage, source impedance and transformer leakage. To provide protection on this kind of transformer fault, a turn to turn winding should be used rather than a single turn of the winding. Using a single turn will result in an undetectable change of current at the transformer's terminals and serious damage could occur. Tank Faults This type of transformer fault may occur if the tank leaks resulting in a loss of oil. This can produce very dangerous conditions. The winding insulation becomes reduced due to this transformer fault and the load can become over heated due to a loss of cooling. If an on-load tap changer loses power, then a set of copper relays will fall into a closed position to provide a passive bypass. When this happens, an interruption may occur. Transformer faults with on-load tap changers are usually caused by mechanical, electrical, short circuit, and overheating.
