State-of-the-Art Transformer Bank Manufacturer Offering Top Quality at Wholesale PricesTransformer BankTransformer bank is a term that is used when two or more single phase transformers are connected together that will supply power to a three phase load. When these three single phase transformers are connected together to form the transformer bank, they will produce a KVA capacity of three times the nameplate rating that is on each single phase transformer. If you have a KVA of 5 on each single phase transformer, then when all three are connected together, the KVA capacity will be 15. Transformer Bank ConnectionsThe connections of a transformer bank are generally connected with a combination of Delta and Y connections. Delta-Delta Connection - This is when both the primary windings and the secondary windings of the single phase transformers are both connected in Delta to form the transformer bank. Open-Delta Connection - This type of transformer bank connection is used if one of the three transformers in the Delta-Delta transformer bank fails. All that is done is one of the single phase connections is disconnected which converts it to an Open-Delta connection for emergency operations. The Open-Delta connection now delivers three phase power using only two of the single phase transformers with this type of transformer bank. The capacity of the transformer bank is reduced by 58% of the original capacity. The Open-Delta connection is also used when there is a very large single phase load and a very small three phase load. This is when the transformer that is supplying the single phase load is much larger than the other transformer and it is also grounded at it's midpoint. You can only ground one of the midpoints in this type of transformer bank. Y-Delta Connection - In this type of transformer bank, three of the primary windings are going to be Y-connected and the three secondary windings will be Delta connected. This connected can also be transformed into a Delta-Y connection, which is when the primary is connected in Delta and the secondary is connected in Y. Open Y-Delta Connection - Again, in an emergency situation, this type of transformer bank can be used. One of the transformers is removed which converts it to the Open Y-Delta connection. This type of transformer bank connection will generally cause unbalanced conditions and cause excessive current to flow in the neutral. It is not recommended except for extreme emergencies. Y-Y Connection - This type of transformer bank connection, both a 120 volt single phase lighting and 208 volt three phase power can be obtained for a four wire secondary. Three phase power transformers can be purchased rather than forming a transformer bank of individual single phase transformers. If the proper size cannot be found or the turn ratios are not available, than locating three single phase transformers and having them connect as a transformer bank is the way to go.
