In the transformer world, a toroid is basically a coil of enameled or insulated wire that is wired around a doughnut shaped form such as a core. People have compared this design to the precision of a tightly wound clock. This tightly wound core ensures that all the molecules are aligned in the direction of the flux. The optimum performance of the toroid transformer depends on this molecule alignment. The toroid design can be influenced by the different materials that are used in the components of the core and the windings. They play a huge role in configuring the size and weight of the toroid transformer. The toroid transformer will typically use copper wiring that is wrapped around the core.
