The step down voltage transformer is basically constructed like most transformers, transforming voltage through a magnetic coupling.  The step down voltage transformer does not have any moving parts to it.  The core of the step down voltage transformer is magnetic and is generally made of iron.  This core has one winding of wire that is close to one or more windings that will couple two or more alternating current circuits together.  This is done by the induction that is between the windings.  On a step down voltage transformer, the primary winding is connected to the power source and all the other windings are called secondary windings.  As long as the secondary winding is less than the primary winding, it is truly a step down voltage transformer.  If it was the other way around, then is would be called a step up voltage transformer.  By stepping down the incoming voltage, this transformer allows the capability of having the correct input voltage for your electrical needs.  If you have a main power supply of 220 volts and your equipment that you are running needs 110 volts, then the step down voltage transformer is the perfect device that is capable of handling this.
