Primary Current Transformer

A primary current transformer is basically a current transformer as referenced in high current transformer.  Total primary current in a transformer is called the exciting current.  It is comprised of magnetizing current and any additional current that is necessary for it to overcome any losses.  TEMCo is a reliable source for locating a primary current transformer for any application.  Their primary current transformer specialists can assist you with all your needs.  Give them a call at 510-490-2187.

Primary Current Transformer Windings

A primary current transformer will have two windings.  One being a high current  primary winding and the other one will be a low current secondary winding.  In a primary current transformer, the primary winding current is totally independent of the secondary winding load.  The primary winding current on the primary current transformer will only depend on the circuit to which the primary winding is connected.  Most often, the primary current transformer's primary winding will only have one turn in the winding.  It has a very low impedance and will have a negligible effect on the main current.  In other words, the primary winding current on the primary current transformer will remain the same as the main current, no matter what changes are made to the secondary winding load. 

The primary winding on the primary current transformer is made up of three components.  It has loss current which supplies iron and copper loss and  magnetizing current, which establishes flux in the core of the primary current transformer.  The third component is the load current.  These currents in the primary current transformer are not in phase with each other as there are differences in the phase angles.  These angles will change when the load changes.  The vector sum of these currents in always the primary winding current on the primary current transformer.  That is why we say that the primary winding current will remain the same no what changes are made to the secondary winding load on the primary current transformer.

Primary Current Transformer Design

Primary current transformers are often constructed with a single primary turn.  This is done either as an insulated cable that passes through a toroidal core or else as a bar in which the circuit conductors are connected.  The toroidal core is generally used and most popular type of core that is used for primary current transformer applications.  Since there is no air gap in the core, the magnetizing current will generally always be small.  This type of geometric core on the primary current transformer fits perfectly with flux flow in the core.  The core material is able to be utilized efficiently giving a very small core loss as the result when using the primary current transformer.
