How The Neon Transformer Works With A Neon SignA neon sign is a colorless, odorless gas that is filled into glass tubes that are shaped into whatever design you desire. Under high pressure, air is turned to liquid with temperatures of about 200 degrees at which point the neon is produced. This neon is then attached to a high voltage neon transformer that charges the electrode on one end of the neon tube with a positive charge. The other end of the neon tube is then charged with a negative charge. Both of the negative and positive charges will be attracted to one another and at this point these charges will rely on the neon atoms to reach one another. When the neon gas gets a connection between the electrodes, and electrical charge is built. Then the electrical charge with go to the neon atoms which will vary the speed of the electrons and a photon is released. Once this photon is released, it will emit the neon light. The neon transformer will convert 120 volts from the power source up to 15,000 volts for the neon sign. The ratings for a typical neon sign are 30-60 milliamperes, but most neon transformers are usually twice that size. The neon transformer is connected to the electrodes in the sign with a special wire, which is called a GTO wire. This wire should be insulated for approximately 7,500 volts. Individual sections of the neon tubing will also be connected with this wire. The wire from the tubing is then connected to the neon transformer through an insulated housing that will have a spring connection on one end of it. This housing is made of borosilicate glass. The neon transformers are available in increments of 2,000 to 15,000 secondary volts. You will need to determine how much juice you need to power the neon sign. The power will be measured in high voltages which are called secondary volts. This is because it steps up the primary voltage.
