K Factor Insulation

Transformers are often referenced having K factor insulation in the industry today.  The K factor insulation is the insulation value of the material that is being used to insulate the transformer.  TEMCo offers a wide variety of transformers that have K factor insulation.  TEMCo is a leading manufacturer and distributor of some of the best transformers on the market today.  Their K factor insulation specialists can assist you in finding just the right transformer for your applications. 

What is K Factor Insulation?

K factor insulation is a rate at which the heat will flow though the insulation.  The values for K factor insulation are generally based on one-inch thickness of the material.  When the K factor insulation is at a lower value, the better the K factor insulation value will be.  Some of the various materials used for K factor insulation are:

  • Fiberglass - with a K factor insulation rating of .22 - .30

  • Vermiculite - with a K factor insulation rating of .50 - .60

  • Urethane Rigid Foam - with a K factor insulation rating of .11 - .16

One thing to remember about K factor insulation is that the K factor rating can change when the material becomes aged.  For instance if the urethane foam is at .11 - .16 when it is new, it can become .15 - .16 when it is two to six months old.  It should then remain stable after that. 

K Factor Insulation Transformers

The K factor insulation transformers are designed to tolerate harmonic distortions that can be associated with various applications.  K factor insulation transformers are used with non-linear loads that can be created by computers, electronic ballasts, fax and copy machines, video display terminals and other programmable controllers.  Without using a K factor insulation transformer, the harmonic currents can cause the transformer and systems to overheat and become completely destroyed.  Since harmonics create heat, the K factor insulation transformer are always sized appropriately to overcome any additional heat that is generated.  A K factor insulation transformer is generally made with some sort of high grade silicon steel, a lot more air ducts and copper windings, which are insulated.  The K factor transformer will have a double sized neutral conductor.
