Many of the new solid state devices that have appeared in the industry today have created major problems for engineers due to harmonics. What is K Factor?When we speak of K factor, we are speaking about the rating the transformer is given by the ANSI/IEEEE C57. This is a system that is derived of weighing just how much harmonic load electrical currents on a transformer can handle. It should never exceed it's maximum temperature rise level. We have found that harmonics will generate additional heat in the transformer, which could create possible overheating and maybe even start a fire. Using a transformer that has a K factor will prevent this from happening and also increase the life of the transformer. A transformer with a K factor works by using a double sized neutral conductor. This conductor will either change the geometry of the conductor or multiple conductors for the coils. You will see K factor used anywhere in which non-linear loads are present. The values of K factor will range anywhere from 1 to 50. Linear loads will use the K factor of 1 only and the range of K factor 50 is used for the most harshest harmonic environments. The most typical K factor used is 13. To be able to find the K factor that is needed, you will need to calculate your load and then find a K factor of equal or a higher value.
