Iron Core Transformer

An iron core transformer is a transformer that is generally used at low frequencies, such as 50 Hz and 400 Hz.  The iron core transformer is considered a low-reluctance magnetic material.  There are many types of iron core transformers on the market today and TEMCo is one of the leading manufacturers and distributors of just such a transformer.  Call a TEMCo representative at 510-490-2187 and they will be happy to assist you in locating just the right iron core transformer for whatever application you may need it for.

Iron Core Transformer Conductivity

When using an iron core transformer, you will find that it is a major conductor of electricity.  It is also a great conductor of magnetic flux.  The electrical currents are induced in the iron core transformer just like they are induced in the secondary windings of the transformer from the alternating magnetic field.  These induced currents in the iron core transformer will circulate through the cross section of the iron core transformer perpendicularly to the primary winding turns.  Eddy currents are then formed from this circular motion of the currents on the iron core transformer.  Sometimes there can be a significant loss of eddy currents when using an iron core transformer.  To eliminate this situation, you can divide the iron core into thin insulated laminations.  

Since eddy currents can increase with frequencies, any higher frequency power like 400Hz that are used in military and aircraft applications, will use thinner laminations on the iron core transformer.  This will keep the eddy current losses down to a respectable minimum.  Another way to eliminate this eddy current would be to use an iron core transformer that is made of iron core powder rather than the thin iron core sheets.  The granules of the iron are individually coated in an electrically insulated material.  This makes the iron core transformer nonconductive except within the width of each granule. 

Various Iron Core Materials

  • Nickel Iron - A combination of nickel and iron - used with higher frequencies and is preferred over silicon steel.  Nickel iron can be operated beyond 10 kilohertz.  Superior saturation level with high permeability. 

  • Powdered Iron Cores - A combination of iron alloys are ground and mixed with a binding material, then pressed to form a iron core transformer.  The binding material is an insulator that reduces any eddy currents.  The saturation range is from 14 kilogauss depending on the type of iron core transformer.

  • Nickel-Iron Powdered Core - Composed of 50% nickel and 50% iron powered alloys.  One of the highest saturation levels in the powered cores, which is 15 kilogauss.  The core loss is significantly lower with this type of powdered core.

  • Laminated Iron Cores - Sheets of thin iron that is covered with an insulating varnish.  Dividing the iron core into thin insulated laminations will minimize eddy current loss.   

Types of Iron Core Transformers

  • Step-Down Transformer - The magnetic core is generally made of iron with one winding of wire that is placed close to either one or more of the windings that can couple two or more alternating current.  The secondary voltage is less than the primary voltage on this type of iron core transformer.

  • Step-Up Transformer - Construction of two or more coils of insulated wire that is wound around an iron core.  The secondary voltage is higher than the primary. 

  • Toroidal Transformer - An iron core that is doughnut shaped with a torus surface.  Insulated wire is wound around the iron core.
