Insulating Transformer Materials

One of the most common materials used in an insulating transformer is oil.  This dates backs to over 100 years that oil has been used.  There are many other materials that are now used but oil filled insulating transformers are still very popular.  The oil that is used in insulating transformers can also be used with other insulating transformer materials.  Dry type insulating transformers will generally use materials such as fiberglass-reinforced polyester molding components, while the liquid filled insulating transformer will generally employ insulators that are made of porcelain.  The dry type insulating transformer are usually intended to be used indoors with a moisture proof enclosure and they are available with a rating up to 15kV.  The liquid filled or oil filled insulating transformers ratings will exceed 500kV, plus they are track resistant and can also be utilized for outdoor usage.  Here is a list of just a few of some of the various materials that can be used with an insulating transformer:

Insulating Transformer Types

Oil Filled Or Liquid Insulating Transformer

Using an oil filled or liquid filled insulating transformer is generally more efficient with a longer life expectancy.  The overload of using this type of insulating transformer seems to be much greater as well.  The liquid filled insulating transformer is very good at reducing any hot spot coil temperatures better than a dry type of insulating transformer.  The only concern with this type of insulating transformer, is the risk of flammability.  They sometimes can have leakage occur and will need to have a containment trough added which will guard against any fluid leaks. 

The liquid type insulating transformer windings will be constructed as a rectangular or cylindrical form.  Between the layers of windings, spacers are used, which allows the fluid to flow as it cools the windings and the core of the insulating transformer.  The tank of this type of insulating transformer will be sealed.  This tank holds the core and the coils.  The liquid will flow through the ducts and around the ends of the coil.  At this point, the main heat exchange takes place in the external elliptical tubes.  When using a type of paper insulation with this liquid filled insulating transformer, a temperature rise of 65 degrees C is possible.  These type of insulating transformers are almost always seen used in an outdoor environment.

Dry Type Insulating Transformer

 The dry type insulating transformer are generally used indoors and used for lower ratings.  This type of insulating transformer is usually constructed and designed with enclosures that will have louvers.  They are most often sealed as well.  Some of the insulations that are used with the dry type insulating transformer are; epoxy resin, cast resin, varnish, or vacuum pressure impregnated varnish.   If the dry type unit is not sealed, than the core, coil and lead assemblies should always be cleaned to protect them from any kind of contaminant build up.  Dielectric strength and the ability to withstand thermal limits is provided when you use the dry type of insulating transformer.  Some of the typical temperature rises that are seen with the dry type are 150 degree C, 115 degree C, and 80 degree C.  This of course is based on what type of insulation is used.
