A DC transformer is generally used with low voltage electronics. This type of transformer will convert AC (alternating current) into DC current. The DC transformer is seen on a day to day basis in many homes and offices as they are generally attached to some sort of office equipment or appliances. . What Is A DC Transformer?A DC transformer is usually a small conventional electronic transformer. The AC output is converted to DC current with the help of a device called a rectifier. By using a DC transformer, the output will eliminate voltage drop and will also reduce any radiated radio frequency interference. Voltage drop is the drop in voltage over a long circuit. The DC transformer can include special features for electrical isolation, control and instrumentation applications along with power distribution. More useful than battery power - cuts a big expense What's Inside A DC Transformer?Inside the DC transformer, you will find two windings. The DC transformer is going to convert the normal 120 volts down to 3 to 12 volts. There is a primary winding that is on the left in which the 120 volts comes into. Down the middle of the winding is an iron core. This AC current in the primary winding will create a magnetic field that will alternate in the iron. The secondary winding will wrap around the same core. In the secondary winding, the magnetic field that is in the core will create current. The voltage in the secondary will be controlled by the number of turns in both windings. If both the primary and secondary have the same amount of turns, then they will both have the same amount of voltage. If you were to drop the volts down to 3, than there would need to be 40 more turns in the primary than what is in the secondary. On the other side of the transformer, you will find two diodes that are wrapped in rubber insulation. These diodes will act an a rectifier which will turn all of the AC current into DC current. Most DC transformers that we find around our homes and in offices, will produce this low voltage of 3 to 12 volts with less than an amp of current.
