Autotransformer

An autotransformer is a special transformer where the primary windings and the secondary windings are combined together.  This resigns the galvanic circuit separation.  The autotransformer is used with motors and other inductive loads and are not necessarily recommended to be used with DC equipment, electronic controls or computer applications.  Many autotransformers are used to step up or step down single and or three phase line voltages to a certain voltage that is needed.  TEMCo autotransformers are constructed with 100% copper wiring in which it is a single copper wire coil that is common with both the primary and secondary circuits and then these wires are wound around a silicone steel core.

A Typical Autotransformer Circuit

The current that is in the low voltage circuit will flow through the common winding and will give magnitude and direction to the current in the high voltage circuit which will give the common winding current.  Now an electrical connection will exist between both the high voltage and the low voltage windings.  Because of this, the output rating on an autotransformer is generally smaller in weight than a two winding transformer would be.  

Autotransformer Applications

The larger autotransformers are generally used to interconnect high voltage power systems.  If intermittent duty starting of motors is needed, you will see an autotransformer used for this.  When this happens, the motor will be connected for a very short time to the common winding voltage.  After this happens then it is connected to the full line voltage.  There is also what we call a variable-ratio autotransformer that is generally used for testing components of different applications.  You should never use an autotransformer in any closed delta connections.  What happens if you do is, a phase shift could be introduced into the circuit which will cause higher power use. The autotransformer is best used in an application in which the line voltage needs to be matched to a protected piece of equipment.  Machine tools would be a good example of this, especially ones that were manufactured in Europe and were designed to operate on 400V.  An autotransformer could convert the 480 supply voltage to 400V must less expensive and easier than an isolation transformer. 

The Difference - Autotransformer &  Isolation Transformer

First of all, the autotransformer is much more economical than an isolation transformer is along with being much more compact in size.  The separation of the winding is one of the main differences between the autotransformer and the isolation transformer.  The autotransformer basically should only be used where the line voltage is completely matched to a protected piece of equipment, otherwise, voltage spikes and electrical noise is capable of passing through the lines unchecked.  Since the autotransformer only uses a single coil winding, no protection is offered like an isolation transformer can offer.
